It was 1209 when San Francesco went for the first time to Greccio, (province of Rieti), a small village perched at 700 meters high. At the saint, Greccio remembered Bethlehem and thus expressed the desire to celebrate a Christmas night. Hence the idea of creating the first living nativity scene in history.
It was December 24, 1223.
