The "St. Francis' Sonnet" is a poetic and musical text that expresses, in a simple yet profound way, the joy of feeling part of God's work.
The main meaning unfolds around three great Franciscan themes:
– love born from humility. The text tells of the sweetness of discovering a new, humble love in one's heart, which unites man with God and creatures. This love dispels loneliness, making us feel part of a life greater than ourselves;
– gratitude for creation. As in the Canticle of the Creatures, Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Mother Earth, air, water, fire, wind are mentioned: all gifts that bear witness to God's generosity. Nature is seen not only as external beauty, but as a sign of divine love;
– praise and humility. The spiritual refrain "Praised be, our Lord" underlines the call to live in gratitude and to serve God with humility. The last verse, "Blessed is he who serves Him in humility," encapsulates the heart of Franciscan spirituality: true happiness lies in living simply, recognizing that everything is a gift.
